Driver Ed
Credit: The committee approved the
proposal togrant one-half credit for successful
completion of any State ofVermont-approved private
Driver Education program. As is stated in theProgram
of Studies, students should inform the guidance office oftheir
intention to take D.E. outside of school before the course begins. Acertificate or other evidence of completion must be
presented at theconclusion of the course. Successful
student drivers will receive a“Pass” rather than a
letter grade.
Health /JROTC
Credit: The topic of the adequacy of
embedded health elements inthe JROTC program -
especially considering the fact that one-half credit inhealth
education is a state requirement for graduation - was debated.Wellness
instructor Nancy Lynn provided the committee with anoutline
of her department’s health curriculum, a copy of the relevantVermont
Standards, and a listing of the course work required forcertification
as a health teacher. Cindy and Jeff
explained that themotivation behind their decision to
grant health credit for JROTCwas to boost JROTC
participation and provide students with more options.While
many members of the committee agreed with this goal, the concern wasthat the current objectives of the JROTC program do not addressthose of the Wellness curriculum in sufficient
depth.
Cindy suggested thatfreshmen
currently enrolled in JROTC take the health quarter-course offeredin
the sophomore year. Meanwhile, JROTC instructors and members of theFamily and Consumer Sciences department will meet to
compare notes. It ishoped that the
future Freshman Academy and revised class schedulewill
provide a solution to the available time/student interestproblem.
Capstone Pilot: Bev Scofieldpresented the letters
of intent prepared by the two students piloting theCapstone
process. The committee reviewed the letters and made suggestionsas
to how several points might be clarified. The students will meet withtheir Community Consultants before our next session.
Alternative Credit
Process: A draft of the proposed AcademicIndependent
Study application form was distributed. This will be discussedat
the next meeting.
