RE:  Notes of Graduation Committee Meeting: 9/26/05

The forms for both sports and independent study P.E. credit
were    distributed and discussed. These will be used this year and
reevaluated at a later date. Guidance will be in charge of providing them
to students. Shawn Woods and the P.E. dept. will review the applications
and grant preliminary and final approval of student proposals.
The committee decided to recommend that alternative sports credit
NOT be awarded for participation in freshman sports, as many freshmen will
be enrolled in P.E. classes.
        P. E. teachers said that they would prefer a mix of freshmen and
upperclassmen in their classes and that, as part of the proposed
reorganization, the P.E. and Health ed. departments be combined. They also
felt that requiring all freshmen to take one credit of P.E. would cause
problems with class sizes. They plan to send a representative to the
Freshman Academy committee to discuss these issues. Concerns were also
expressed regarding the safety implications of having no female P.E.
teacher.
Nancy Lynn distributed copies of her letter to Jim in which she
expressed her concerns regarding the decision to award health credit
through JROTC.  Many members of the committee wondered why we had not been
consulted regarding this decision and felt that the appropriate elements of
the JROTC program must meet the same objectives as the health curriculum if
such credit is to be granted. Nancy will provide us with copies of the
health standards for our review.
Felicia Smithers commented on her experience as a RUHS senior who had
completed a senior project. Two SHS students will be piloting a capstone
procedure this year. Bev will ask them to write their formal proposals and
submit them to the committee for the next meeting. We will then proceed
with the next step of the process.
