Changes
|
|
1. Violence
|
34
|
0
|
- Consider
legal prosecution
- Severe
violence or multiple offences should be prosecuted under the law
- Including
slamming fists into lockers, etc?
Safety value?
- Counseling
to address the underlying issues will shorten the length of suspension
- Very
strong disciplinary action – fine the kids
- Are
you talking no friendly joking around & when kids push in fun?
|
|
2. Harassment
|
33
|
1
|
- Consider
anti-harassment training
- Not
strict enough, send a message of no tolerance, detention seems a bit
light
- Will
this include against kids with special needs?
- Counseling
to address the underlying issues will shorten the length of suspension
- Very
subtle – kids need to know what it is
|
|
3. Racial/sexual
Harassment
|
34
|
0
|
- Consider
anti-sexual harassment training
- Beyond
suspension – mandatory tolerance/legal issues counseling
- Counseling
to address the underlying issues will shorten the length of suspension
|
|
4. Hugging/
Physical Contact
|
5
|
22
|
- Friendly
hug should be ok
- Hand
shakes? This one needs work
- Define
“physical” i.e. holding hands
- Handholding,
hugging is pro-social & developmentally appropriate to this age
- This
rule needs to be very specific and detailed, hugs and kisses for
greetings are ok
- Identify
as inappropriate, but remove consequence
- Holding
hands, hugging, goodbye kisses ok
- No
touching in inappropriate place, open mouth kissing, petting/grinding
- I
see a lot of appropriate hugs of support between students
- Individual
tolerance thing, perhaps definition of going to far – what you wouldn’t
do in front of your parents
- Physical
sexual contact
- A
quick hug ok
- Need
student input
- Find
a line to draw
- Left
to teacher to stop it in the halls
- It’s
inappropriate, but maybe no detention
- Take
out the word hugging
- There
is a difference between hugging and sexual contact. Other “physical contact” seems vague
- Hugging
and holding hands are acceptable
- Hugging,
physical needs to be differentiated between sexual and friendly
- This
needs to be clarified
- No
holding hands? We often hug when
grieving. This is a hard one
- No
intimate contact
- Intimate
physical contact is inappropriate at school and will result in detention
- Remember
the age group we’re serving
- Appropriate
to time/place/occasion (teacher discretion)
|
|
5. Unexcused Absences
|
25
|
5
|
- What
are the state laws?
- Grades
punish poor attendance
- Natural
consequences are enough
- Unclear,
do you mean class cut or missing a day w/out a note from parent
- Teacher
or principal detention
- Noted
in grading
- Detention
with zeroes
- There
are too many excused reasons
- Initial
parental contact will be made to enlist support of policy
|
|
6. Tardies
|
14
|
16
|
- Let
grades punish poor attendance
- Again,
natural consequences
- Define
number and consequence
- Flexible,
teacher’s discretion
- In
classroom
- Saturday
in-school detention
- If
excessive number, study hall – four hours, no food, no phones, no fun
- Parent
conferences not effective?
- School-wide
definition and policy
|
|
7. Hall Passes
|
19
|
10
|
- Must
have hall passes. If a student is
in a hall w/out a pass or somewhere not on the pass, escort back to
issuing teacher
- Must
have consistency throughout the school
- Hold
teacher responsible for repeate offenders, not
tardy or cut
- Permanent
passes bring germs from the bathroom into the classroom. I use paper passes if students are
going out of my hallway
- I
can definitely see an advantage to having some rules different for
underclassmen and seniors
- Standard
pass or teacher generated pass
- Teacher
should have hall duty for 30 min every 2 weeks during prep. Block, must
sing up and talk w/ walkie talkie
- Students
should not be allowed to wander.
Requiring passes cuts down on hall traffic. However, our system varies so much
now. Some teachers write passes
for each student, others use a rubber chicken. If a student is going to the bathroom and
the bathroom is next door to the classroom, it seems unnecessary to
write a pass
- I
have sanitary concerns with permanent passes, all other passes are good
- Must
insist on being consistent
- Add
student I.D.
- How
will this help detention overload?
- Allow
more freedom; if freedom is abused then consequence
- Prison-like
for older students
- It’s
hard to feel like we have to stop every student in the hallway to
visually inspect every pass.
Could we have some kind of easily visible standard pass
throughout the building?
|
|
8. Food &
Beverage
|
4
|
29
|
- Unless
allowed by teacher
- Too
much dropped/spilled food in the hallway
- Allow
in hallways/classrooms, use teacher discretion
- Leave
up to teacher in the classroom
- H2O
only
- Teachers
have freedom to make exceptions in their classrooms
- Identify
appropriate time & place for food use
- It
keeps us alive, let’s address related issues of mess &
responsibility
- No
rule, allow teacher discretion
- Teacher
discretion
- Water
should be allowed, also food can be part of curriculum or tool as reward
- Classroom
should be teacher discretion, no glass, no open containers in hall
- Healthy
snacks are part of curriculum
- Teacher
discretion, kids need food
- Food
should be allowed in classrooms
- I
would rather have students eat in class then fall asleep When students talk they need
H2O & juice (I do). I support
not allowing soda or junk food
- Teacher
discretion (x7)
- I
get tired of enforcing this, teachers do not seem to enforce
- Food
should only be in cafeteria, too much garbage in desks
- Teacher
discretion, H2O should be allowed
- Allow,
teachers eat and drink in class
- Students
need food & drink
|
|
9. Electronic
Devices
|
5
|
26
|
- Unless
permitted by instructor
- Personal
music devices = not good
- Students
need to be taught when appropriate and when not
- Kids
need cell phones, but none are allowed to be used in my room. People need to socialize, left up to
teacher
- No
laser pointers, others are ok in halls
- Teachers
can make decisions for personal listening devices, all others should be
banned
- Teachers
ensure consistency
- Identify
proper places/times for use
- Graphing
calculators disrupt my class, ipods/cameras
useful. Cell phones disrupt but
students rely on them to coordinate transportation. Can we allow them during passing times
and ban use during class?
- Not
to be used during class
- Discretion
– CD players/Ipods allowed in class, teacher
discretion for purposes of better concentration. Cell phones off during class and out
of sight. Use them between
classes and at lunch.
- Let
teacher set rules, confiscate if violated
- Music
devices/cameras = teacher discretion.
Cell phones, pagers, beepers not allowed on or out at any time
between 1st & 4th block
- Hate
cell phones in class – specific rule about them?
- Ipods ok in quiet work time
- Not
used in class
- Cells
distract, not sure we can enforce confiscating, parents contact their
kids through cells
- In
some classes student may need to use cameras, radios, cd players, ipods. No need for students to have beepers,
pagers, laser pointers. How are
the devices being used?
- Students
need phones
- During
informal writing – ipods useful
- Ipods/cells = allow at lunch
- Why
are we so rigid on this?
- Keep
out of sight – teacher confiscate if distracting, just for a time
- Check
cells at door
- Allow
Ipod, teacher discretion, don’t allow cells in
class
- Ipod/cameras/cdplayers = teacher discretion. I want beepers, pagers, cells =
confiscated if brought to school
- Teacher/classroom
discretion
- Teachers
should allow/disallow as they see fit
|
|
10. Skateboards
|
11
|
24
|
- But
certainly not to be used in school (X4)
- In
lockers during school hour, must be carried on grounds (X5)
- Special
storage for those who use them for transportation (X2)
- Allow,
but not use inside
- Not
to be ridden in school
- Not
used in school (liability) but possession should not be a crime (X2)
- No
rule/ not to be used during class
- Is
this a problem?
- Not
in halls or classrooms
- Up
to student (not in building) give independence
- Students
should put skateboards in their lockers or in some other spot until the
end of the school day
- Students
shouldn’t ride them in school
- Can
there be places where they are allowed?
- Never
seen on the third floor
- As
long as not used in hall
|
|
11. Skipping Class
|
29
|
2
|
- The
only “official” difference b/w ex & unex. Absences is being allowed to make up class work. Does anyone but me enforce this?
- Remove
students after 5 class cuts
- My
high school had Saturday detentions of varying lengths, 1hr, 2hr, 3hr
- Students
need to attend class. I like idea
of Friday school
- Detention
with zeroes. Lack of proper
behavior should impact negatively on grades
- This
doesn’t happen that often
|
|
12. Athletes/Friday
School
|
10
|
14
|
- Double
punishment? (X2)
- No
opinion
- No
preferential treatment regarding p.d.
- Not
fair to have to stay and also miss sports (one or the other)
- Double
Jeopardy (X2)
- ?
- Athletes
should be asked for grades & signatures of teachers from each class
every week. Any grade below 70%
and students can’t play any games that week
- Crossed
off list (X2)
- If
absent/suspended – can’t participate in school activities that
night/weekend (if family emergency/appt.)
- Athletic
event = game
|
|
13. Lateness
|
19
|
10
|
- ?
- When
one is late in the business world, co-workers must step up and do more
work. In the classroom teachers
must re-teach. Tardiness must
have consequences, but perhaps at teacher discretion
- Do
they get detention for arriving to school late and detention for not
being in their seat when the bell rings too?
- I
like this but would be very difficult to enforce and a lot of potential
paperwork
- Students
need to be in school on time
- Allowances
are made for emergencies
- NO!
- Should
be addressed by teachers/noted in teachers’ grading
- Will
make up time with teacher during TA
- I’d
be hypocritical to agree
- What’s
a non-emergency? Traffic
jam? Bad roads?
- Definitely!
- This
is a social skill, to be on time
- Teacher
detention with grade impact
|
|
14. Dance
Attendance
|
6
|
21
|
- ?
(X2)
- I do
not care
- 1x a
week for several weeks? Has
consequence…see #12
- Any
school activities for one week…sports, clubs, practice, games, etc.
- Double
punishment
- Is
this a real punishment these days??
- Why? If suspended that day, yes, but
otherwise…
- Dances
aren’t well attended anyway, so I don’t think this will be a deterrent
- If
absent or suspended can’t participate in school activity that night
- Middle
schoolish
- They
already got suspended? But could
have a fight?
|
|
15. Hats
|
8
|
25
|
- “No
hat zone” or allow hats
- Regardless
of school policy, I will not allow hats in my kingdom…I mean classroom
- Teachers
should decide individually
- Is
this a generational issue?
- There
won’t be any hats in my classroom but I’m tired of enforcing a rule that
many teachers ignore
- Hats
should be allowed
- Waste
of time and energy
- No
rule (X2)
- Not
a battle to pick – teacher discretion
- No
hats in my room, tired of hallway battle
- Outdating
rule, should be at the discretion of teacher
- Teacher
discretion (X3)
- Students
should be allowed to wear hats
- I
think hats are inappropriate in class but tired of speaking to students
in hall…should we let go of the rule?
- Hat
rule ridiculous
- Let
them wear hats
- Too
many chances, it’s not a ball game.
I agree with the rule but don’t want to keep track and confiscate
- Leave
to individual teachers
- Not
worth the fight
- Who
keeps the hat?
- Who
does the paperwork?
