Students with an interest in becoming a licensed Cosmetologist upon graduation from high school should enroll in this program. Upon the completion of this two year, 1500 hour program students will be able to take the State of Vermont Licensing Exam.

Since this is a two year program it is essential that students meet as many of the high school requirements as possible during their freshman and sophomore years.

Students interested in this program should enroll in Anatomy & Physiology or Introductory Biology and Chemistry. In addition, students wishing to own and operate their a business should enroll in Business Management, Business Law, Keyboarding, Word Processing, and Accounting

LABOR MARKET OUTLOOK/
POTENTIAL EARNINGS:

An entry level cosmetologist may expect an average hourly rate of approximately $8.60 in most regions of Vermont. An experienced cosmetologist of five years may expect $10.00 to $12.00 hourly. (Most salons pay on commission basis.) Ten years experience could average $12.00 to $15.00 hourly. Tips should be considered as an important part of this income. Salon managers average approximately $20,000 to $23,000 annually. An owner could average approximately $30,000 to $35,000 annually in the State of Vermont. Money magazine recently designated Cosmetology as one of the “Fastest growing, most desirable job fields in the nation.”
